Back-to-School Organization: Tips for a Smooth Transition

As summer winds down and the back-to-school season approaches, getting your home and routines in order can make a huge difference. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you stay organized and make the transition as smooth as possible.

1. Clean Out the Closets

Before you start back-to-school shopping, take the time to clean out your kids' closets. Remove any items they've outgrown or that have seen better days.

  • Remove sizes they've grown out of: Donate or store clothes that no longer fit.

  • Sort by category: Organize the remaining items into categories and designate specific areas in the closet or dresser for each.

  • Make a list: Identify what new items are needed for the school year and add them to your shopping list.

2. Set Up a Drop Zone

Set up a designated drop zone for school items to keep your home from becoming chaotic.

  • Backpacks and lunch boxes: Install hooks or cubbies in a convenient location, such as the mudroom or foyer.

  • Set expectations: Ensure your kids know this is where their school items should go daily.

3. Create a Homework Station

A dedicated homework station can help your kids focus and keep their supplies organized.

  • Fill a caddy: Stock a caddy with pencils, erasers, scissors, glue sticks, and other homework essentials.

  • Choose a location: Place the caddy in an easily accessible spot, like the kitchen table, to make homework time more efficient.

4. Stock Up on Snacks

Healthy snacks are essential for keeping kids fueled after school.

  • Healthy options: Stock up on fruits, nuts, yogurt, and other nutritious snacks.

  • Designated space: Allocate space in your pantry or on a 3-tier cart for easy snack access.

5. Add Important Dates to Your Calendar

Staying on top of the school schedule can be challenging, so make sure to add all important dates to your calendar.

  • School orientation and curriculum nights

  • Fall sports schedules

  • PTO events

  • School Calendar: Note days off, early dismissals, and other key dates.

  • Family time: Remember to schedule fun family activities and date nights.

6. Take Inventory of School Supplies

Before you head to the store, see what supplies you already have at home.

  • Leftover supplies: Sort through last year's school supplies and make a list of what's needed.

  • Clean out desks: Go through your kids' desks and clear out old papers. Keep anything special and discard the rest.

  • Check backpacks and lunchboxes: Make sure they're clean and in good condition. Replace any items if necessary.

Following these back-to-school organization tips can prepare your family for a successful and stress-free school year.
